overmoreMore often than not, Gatto found himself confined within the walls of his lab more so than anywhere else. Regardless of his reasoning for still being here, he was not going to suddenly stop giving his best with lab work, especially not now. There were many things the Melodis earl wanted from him, he couldn’t just not do it. Not raising suspicion was his number one priority, and this was helping him avoid that.
As if dating the said man wasn’t helping him already avoid it, this was just icing on the cake for him.
However, Désire was a lot less thrilled with his decision to stick to work so strictly.
“How much time will you dedicate to this? It’s past midnight.”
Gatto knew better than to ignore and continue work, leaving the notes he was taking to look at the other man. Désire was standing at the entrance of the lab, leaning on the door. He was not pleased with Gatto’s constant work overload. In truth, he probably just wanted to drag him to bed so they could fuck, but maybe for once the other just wanted some more company. Gatto doubted it was the case, but one could wonder what was going on in the head of someone like Désire.
“I apologize. I’m not done yet.”
“I know you’re not. You’re meant to leave it until the morning and then finish it then, not stay awake into the night.” Gatto was not used to any sort of anger or displeasure coming at his direction, especially not for something like this. At most, Désire would throw some sarcastic remarks at him, but they were always lighthearted. Could it be that he somehow managed to piss him off by not going to bed at a reasonable time?
“Sir-”
“Could it be that you’re bored,” Désire tilted his head. “Had enough fun? You don’t strike me as a person like that, but you never know. Especially as of late, I see you more outside the bedroom than inside of it. Considering you’re barely there anymore, you could be anywhere during the night and not just here.”
An accusation of cheating of all things was not on Gatto’s list of things he’d expected, but at least he wasn’t figured out. He has been using the late-night work as an excuse to send messages for the detectives from time to time, and if anyone had seen him, that would be a disaster. Maybe someone did see him and assumed he was seeing someone, thus resulting in this. It wasn’t helping his explanation, but it was one of the things that was possible.
“I’ve been working quite a lot, the workload is not small. You mentioned it is time-sensitive, it would not be good to leave it at the last minute. It could damage the reputation and devalue the work that’s done here.”
Désire’s eyes did not seem to leave Gatto, neither did they soften. They were still not over.
“You are quite daring to speak back to me like that.”
“I-I am only telling the truth,” he might've been caught off guard by this situation, but he always had enough proof that he was working, because he almost always did that.
“You are free to look at all of it. I have nothing to hide.” He had already gotten rid of all the evidence he was writing to the detectives, he could never bring himself to leave a trace of that. Everything was triple checked, Désire wouldn’t find anything here.
The Earl looked around, all the work Gatto had done on display, always making sure anyone who needed something from here would be able to get it right away. It came with his upbringing and the fact that it was safer for him to play this game in that way.
While his heart was beating quickly, he could see Désire’s eyes soften after he looked around for a while. The bad situation had been avoided.
“It seems you do work a lot here,” he said. “Maybe a bit too much. Perhaps I could consider another person aiding you in this, at least on the outside. Some of this work could possibly be sourced outside.”
“Most of the easier work, yes. Most of the complicated things and work related to the drug would still have to stay on me.” That would still get rid of most things Gatto worked on at the moment. Most of the small work was done quickly but was time-sensitive and sometimes a bit too fragile, so if a mistake was made, he’d have to do it all over again. It was the nature of his work.
“It would remove the time-sensitive things too.”
“Well, I must do that then.”
The sudden change in attitude did take Gatto off guard, but he had no trouble adjusting to it. Désire stood next to him, his eyes on Gatto again, hand caressing his face, making the other turn red. It was always embarrassing to see this.
“Then you’ll be in bed on time, right?”
“Y-yes.” He might have to find an alternative time for meeting the detectives, maybe the location too.
The smile braced Désire’s face. “Well then, you could've just said you needed help in the lab! You are sometimes hard to deal with dear, but that can’t make me hate you. Just be a little bit more open to… let’s say, talking about your work conditions. I would not want you to be too tired and overworked, it’s not good for you.
“Of course.”
He had a feeling he was going to get dragged out of the lab at any moment. It was good he was just writing down a report, leaving something ongoing could possibly cause an explosion or something worse.
He needed to be more careful with how much time he spent here too. Next time, it could cause something much worse than Désire getting upset and thinking he was cheating, especially with what could come after him being found.
