If there was something Emily truly wanted to happen was for Emma to be a little more considerate of herself. Especially now, at this time, when she should be less active for her own sake.

“Emma, I understand that you’d like to help out others with the garden, it’s something you love, but in this state that is not very smart.”

“Why not? It’s not like something bad is going to happen!” Emma was very careless about this and there was no way of changing how she functions.

Emily sighed. “Emma; you are five months pregnant. A lot of bad things can happen to the baby if you’re not careful.”

The omega did not enjoy her limited movability which started rather soon after finding out she was pregnant. From not being able to participate in the games to having to move carefully everywhere she went, Emma was not amused by her current situation. At some point, Emily had expected her to start doubting the situation and ask her for help over it in some way at least.

However, after what happened to her mother because of her, Emily wasn't sure if she could perform another abortion, especially not here. She could not bear the same thing happening again.

“Can’t I at least go out? The air is fresh and it’s sunny. Don’t tell me that’s also bad?”

“No, it’s not.” Emily adored her restlessness most of the time, but it was a problem now. As much as she wanted her to be happy and do things she liked, sometimes there needed to be some limit due to her situation now.

“I just need you to remember that you can’t be as active as you normally like. I understand that it’s not something you enjoy, but it will last for only a bit longer. Staying a bit more grounded will benefit you and the baby. Can you do that for me?”

Emily was always cautious with Emma in many ways, making sure their child is safe was important, even if it brought in some less favourable situations.

Emma, however, seemed to finally understand.

“I know. I don’t like being like this, but since it will be over soon, I guess I can be like this for a little while longer.” She smiled at Emily, knowing the other appreciated that.

“Still, you will come with me! I want you to look at how they do things so that you know when we get out of here and I can’t garden, you can do it instead of me!”

Emily let out a laugh. “Of course. I’ll do anything for you.”

A little trip to the garden would be relaxing for her. She often wouldn’t think about breaks, so it was nice that Emma could remind her of it if anything. They really did work well together.

And hopefully, that will stay when their little baby is there. As they take care of them, they will grow up with two nice moms who love them. That was a dream come true for any child, and they will try to make that be real to the best of their abilities.

The feeling of uneasiness should've been the first sign that something was wrong.

Noir recognized this as just the usual, he was almost always under some stress. Knowing his heat would approach soon, even on suppressants, some signs could be seen, though no one would be surprised if a new side effect would appear all of a sudden. Uneasiness was listed as one of the possible ones, so it must've been that until now, Noir just never had that.

But then it became more intense.

He wasn't sure what was going on. He took the pills right and in time, there shouldn't be anything wrong with him now. They couldn't have gone bad either since he never took any that were close to the expiration date.

Then the day it would normally come, the heat came.

Just then he realised someone must've done something with the pills he took.

It only took minutes after his awakening to find out who did that, and it wasn't even a surprise.

“Good morning, brother dear. You don't look so good.”

Désire being the culprit behind all of this, should’ve been as clear as day. With how greedy he was, wanting all of Noir’s free time only for himself, at some point, he’d pull something like this, it was just a matter of time. The time was now, it seemed.

“...Seriously?”

“Why so surprised?” Désire said that with no signs of losing his composure. A military-trained alpha had to control themselves better than any other, especially if they ended up working there permanently. Many things from those days still affected Désire, and being able to resist an omega in heat was one of them. Of course, if he were to strip and lay in bed with him, it was a question if he’d be able to handle it, but for someone standing next to an omega in heat, he was doing just fine, as if Noir wasn’t even there.

“You’ve been refusing to spend time with me, dear brother. It makes me sad.”

Sad my ass, Noir thought to himself. There was nothing in this world that could make Désire sad, he was doing this out of spite, nothing else was possible.

“Then I remembered, you don’t really need those,” he said, referring to his pills. “At least not for this month. You are low risk, in the end.”

He was not sure if he was referring to the fact that it isn’t highly likely for him to get pregnant due to his genetics or the fact that if that did happen, terminating it was no issue with their money and the status of the Melodis family. Sometimes, his brother was hard to read.

Désire walked over to the bed, bending down towards him. “You seem quite excited to see me now at least. Will you apologise for avoiding your dear brother now?”

“Fuck you.”

The heat was enough to make Noir say things he would not dare say when without it, and it amused Désire. The only time his brother would be honest without hiding a single thing, always in his most vulnerable moments.

“What a bad dog you are. Someone needs to teach you some manners.”

Noir knew not to fight this battle, it was a losing one anyway.

---

Two or three days? He wasn't sure how long it had been. Whatever the time, it didn't matter. His heat was passing, surprisingly a short one. He never took suppressants regularly, especially with how bad they can be on the body if taken too often, but one would expect them to cause his body to go wild with this heat, considering his last one was three months ago.

Or maybe it was because of Désire.

His scent was already so intoxicating it made him think it would prolong the heat even more, but apparently it cut it short. He never had this happen before, but Noir didn't mind it at this moment. Even if he didn't particularly hate anything now.

Désire was too good for him, even with everything they had going on. His powerful, pretty older brother had him under his fingers, he couldn't even hate the fact they spend half a week just fucking, or the fact that he sabotaged his medicine. It didn't matter anymore, it never would.

No matter how much hurt the other would bring him, he could never hate him fully. Désire was his drug, he could never just give it up, even with everything he would do to him.

Laying patiently next to him, watching him peacefully sleep as if nothing had happened in the past few days. His smell was enough to keep the omega calm, to still cling to him even after everything.

It was always just enough for him.

There was only so much Luca could do before he started doubting himself.

The more time passed, the more his worries grew, and even he knew that was undeniably going to affect him and his relationship with work.

A well-known scientist, something almost unheard of for omegas, doubting himself because his pregnancy was progressing. Not something he should be surprised by, especially with how others were around him. Not a day would pass that someone would try and speak behind his back on how “there should be a free spot in his department soon since he probably won't be coming back once he has the child”. Many nasty, backhanded compliments too. One guy told him Alva was “finally going to have a normal life since he'll have someone always take care of the house as he'd now just leave work when the baby was there”.

The assumption that Luca would just give up everything he'd built for himself, all on his own, was unbelievable to him. No one supported his decision to go into science, not even his family. The amount of times his father just tried to sneakily make him sign some marriage-related papers so that he couldn't go to university was more than could count now.

Alva was the only person in his life who couldn't care less of those social norms. It's why Luca loved him, it's why he married him. The choice of having a child was their own, and it was not something that just came up once and they said “Sure, why not?”. The amount of consideration that went into that was more than the consideration on what Luca's thesis paper should be on, and that was saying something.

But somehow, everyone assumed that Luca was now “fixed”. He hated that term, but so many people were using it behind his back to a degree that he couldn't handle it anymore.

He had started to question the decision to even have the child now.

No one saw it as something nice or happy for them. It was only something that would “put him in his place” and free a spot in the department once he's on leave and until he recovers.

Was it truly a good idea? In a world where he was considered someone lower just because of his secondary gender, was it worth it to even do this?

He’d probably need to talk to Alva about this. The situation is going in a direction he was not fond of, and doing this on his own was not something he should consider. The child would be theirs in the end.

That day he got home earlier. His mind was telling him to make something to eat for both of them. The more time passed, the more his instincts started to kick in. At least one or two more months before he won’t be able to go to work at all, and he’d be stuck here, having to do stuff around the house. The idea didn’t please him much, he wanted to continue his and Alva’s research, but he couldn’t do anything about that now. He also had to take a break too, especially with how tired he’d been getting lately.

Maybe he should make that meal.

---

When Alva came back home to a prepared dinner, he was surprised.

“Since when do you do this on your own?”

“I just felt like it”, Luca simply said.

It wasn’t anything special, he could cook for himself, he had to in the end. To Alva, it might not be a usual sight since they’re used to doing most things together. Cooking, chores, shopping, all was split according to how much each of them could do at the given moment.

Their dinner was silent. Luca did feel less enthusiastic about everything now, and he thought it was showing somehow. He liked to talk about things he did, what he was planning to do, it was something Alva liked about him. He was never quiet about things he enjoyed, so to see him like this must've been questionable at least.

“I see you're quiet today.”

Luca could just nod. He wasn't sure how to bring anything up.

“Care to share? You know I will listen.”

“It's about the baby”, he quietly started.

“Do you feel well? Do we need to go to the doctor?”

“No, not that, the baby's fine. It's… the people, rather. As you know, I'll have to leave in a few months and until the baby's already a bit older. I'm not… sure what to think of that leaving still.”

Alva tilted his head. “Are you worried about work?”

“Yes. You know how they are. They always talk about how it's going to be so good that I'm gonna leave, so that there's an empty spot they can get. I'm pretty sure they won't even let me come back even once I'm healthy again, because why would an omega be there when he has a child to take care of?”

His words might've sounded harsh and were worded clumsily, but he was having enough of everything. Stress was piling up.

“I don't want to sacrifice my work, our work, for a child, no matter how much I do want one. In this line of work, it's impossible to relax or lay low at any point with how everyone in the university is competitive. It would be-”

“Luca.”

Alva would rarely interrupt him, and this was one of the situations where it probably required that.

“You know I am the head of the department, right?”

Luca nodded.

“And you know that no matter what, no one would be taking up your spot, no matter how much people would pressure me for that. I do not desire to work with people who are not on par with me. You, Luca, are one of the few who are able to do that well. You are irreplaceable to me.”

He knew those were not just empty words of encouragement, Alva meant what he said. He still remembers the first days they worked together when he just finished his last year of studying. A harsh tempo, so many things to do and so many tasks that had to be completed in time, Alva knew for no mercy when working sometimes. Only a few could keep up, and Luca was one of them, the best in fact. It was how he and Alva even ended up together in the first place.

“If they really want to put someone instead of you there, they won’t have me on that team. I would not want to work with anyone unable to keep up.”

Too much trust in Luca, that’s what he had. Not that it was a bad thing, especially with how things were.

“So don’t think for a second that you’d be replaced just like that. That won’t be happening at all, not under my watch.”

Luca let out a sigh of relief, something he didn’t do often.

“Thanks. I don’t know why I started thinking like that, I know you’d never let it happen.”

“The way our society is built makes it hard for omegas to function on their own, to have whatever job they want or to just be a part of society without looking down on them. I have never cared for our differences like others have, you know that well. Whatever you think might happen are valid concerns, I cannot blame you for having them. I just want you to remember that I won’t let them do any of that, not while I’m still working in the university.”

A smile creeps up on Luca’s face. Alva knew what he was saying, there was no denying that. That man would do anything for him, anything just to make sure he was alright.

There’s nothing in this world Luca would trade that for.

While it had only been a bit over a month since this had started, Andrew hated pregnancy. His stomach hurt almost all the time, morning sickness was a pain in the ass and his cravings were a bit too odd for himself and other survivors. He had been looked at weirdly quite a few times when he’d get himself some ice to chew on, others wondering if he was okay. Not to mention the need to eat fried eggs with almost every one of his meals, which was starting to annoy whoever was cooking for the day.

But the worst of it all? He couldn’t truly cuddle up against his partner or his partner’s clothes and inhale his scent (something that should calm down any omega) because his partner was a beta.

Well, “partner” was a strong word at this stage. Antonio had agreed to help him out with the baby and then the child when it’s born, but they didn’t particularly have anything that attracted them to each other. The kid Andrew was carrying was the only thing that made them have to be around each other.

And it was not helping that Antonio’s beta status was making the man not understand Andrew’s needs.

“Is it really necessary for you to glue yourself onto me like that?”

“Yes.”

Yet another day when Antonio was done with his match and had the time to just be around Andrew. He had been excused from all matches until all of this was done, so he could do however he pleased for the next couple of months.

“Isn’t it a bit too much? We’re not alone.”

“Don’t you worry we don’t mind.”

He had underestimated the relationship he had with Luchino. Those two were pretty close, even when the other hunter had a partner. This kind of ment the four of them were almost always in the same place at the same time. Norton called it “a double date”. Andrew disagreed. They were all just in the same place, the omegas were kind of just hanging around while the other two talked, alongside Luchino doing whatever he was doing in this lab. At this point, no one was sure what he was trying to achieve here.

“Haven’t you at least tried to learn why he’s doing that?” Luchino asked. “You know, there is a reason for it.”

“You’re right, yea, there probably is.”

“Ask him then!” Nornton did not appreciate that. In his words, Andrew was neglected. He wouldn’t call it that. Antonio was just very unfamiliar with how pregnancy worked with omegas, that’s all. Yea, he should learn now that he got one pregnant, but Andrew can’t help but feel like just letting him take some time with everything. Betas usually end up with other betas, so maybe he was still adjusting to the idea of this? Not like they were mates or anything, but he did choose to stay with him and help.

“When omegas get needy, they tend to reach for their alpha’s clothes or the alpha themself because of the smell they have”, Andrew started on his own in the end. “But since you don’t have a smell, the touch is the most I can get out of this.”

“Uhuh…” Antonio seemed rather… surprised? That wouldn’t be the right word. Feeling bad? That’s what his face seemed to show.

It was true that he couldn't do much to help with that. He’s… normal, for the lack of a better word. None of the things that would affect an alpha or an omega affected him, but it also meant he just had a huge gap in knowledge Andrew should expect in a partner.

Suddenly, he tightened his grip around Andrew’s waist, which did seem to help a bit. Andrew’s face pressed against Antonio’s clothes. While there’s no smell coming off of him, the touch is comforting enough to calm him down.

Yeah, this can work for now. Norton might go off on how the beta should take this more seriously, but he’s sure Antonio can work on this. He just needs a bit more time on it.

Whether Andrew was putting a bit too much faith in him he didn’t know, but it was the least he could do at this stage.

He shouldn’t even be surprised this happened. It was an expected outcome, yet there was still some doubt in it.

“Andrew, I ran all the tests”, Emily said again. “And it’s been over a month since your last heat. You’re pregnant, there’s no other explanation for this.”

Andrew wasn’t scared, not really. The situation here was not ideal, yea, but if something like this were to happen, proper measurements were going to be taken into consideration. It’s not like they can make him participate in games with a stomach like that.

“Do you know who’s the other parent?”

“Yea, yea I know. I should probably let him know that…”

Bringing this up, however, was a different story.

He doesn’t even know how Antonio was going to react to this. He didn’t seem like a person interested in kids or even in having a partner of some sort. Not to mention that he was a beta, so maybe he didn’t even care about it at all.

“You should go do that right away”, Emily said. “So that you know where you stand. I’m guessing you don’t know how he’ll react, but it’s better to get that out of the way sooner rather than later.”

Emily was right: the sooner he knows the answer, the less he can wait for disappointment.

---

Hunter’s side of the manor was always larger than theirs, but this visit made it seem even more intimidating than usual. Andrew suspected it was due to nervousness and maybe even hormones. While it was true not all of them were alphas, it didn’t make it any less intimidating to be around them.

“Andrew? What are you doing here?”

Unexpectedly, and to his luck, the first person he meets is Luca out of everyone. He was probably with Alva for whatever reason, so seeing him was not surprising.

“Hey, have you maybe seen Antonio? I’m looking for him.”

“Eh? Why do you need him?”

“...Doesn’t matter, just say if you’ve seen him or not!” Additional questions will only annoy him even more.

“Damn, alright! So snappy today…”, Luca said. “Last I saw him, he was with Luchino in his lab. He’d probably still be there, those two seem to be really good friends somehow.”

The Alpha in question was the reason he thought Antonio was one, while in reality, they just spend a lot of time together. A part of him didn’t want to believe that, but then he felt the exact same smell on Norton once, solidifying that completely.

“Thanks, I’ll be on my way then.”

“Okay but seriously, what do you need him for-”

Luca did not get a response as Andrew almost flew next to him, wanting to get out of there as soon as he could.

The lab in question was luckily not far from where he was. He took a deep breath, knocking on the door, before getting an answer to come in.

“Who is it now-”

Luchino was surprised to see him here, that was for sure, and the very subtle, but obvious shift in his behaviour had given away that he already knew what was going on with Andrew.

“Is Antonio here?”

“Eh? Ah, the gravekeeper, why are you looking for me?”

He sighed at the sound of the violinist’s voice, knowing this would be short.

“Uh, there’s something I’d like to talk about, if you don’t mind.”

“Yea, sure, what is it?”

Andrew stepped inside, closing the door. He wanted to come closer, though the intense smell of Luchino was doing its thing of making it a bit harder to do so. The alpha did realise this, so he moved away, seemingly pretending to look for something on the other side of the lab.

“Um, so remember when you helped me last month during my heat?” He should start this slowly, Antonio will pick it up eventually.

“Yea, I do”, Antonio responded.

“So, I still haven’t had this month's heat.”

Antonio seemed quiet for a moment, until something in his eyes seemed to light up. Finally, Andrew’s going to get his answer and get this over with.

Truth be told, he’s expecting a not-happy one. He doubts Antonio would get angry or something like that, but he probably wouldn’t be happy about it either. In the end, Andrew would end up being the one to take care of the child, there’s no way around that.

But still… If he doesn’t mind it? Or is even happy about it? Andrew would be glad not to go through this alone. Sure, Antonio isn’t the one that will go through mood swings and random bursts of energy, but having some support to make it easier to go through would make the situation much more pleasant.

…But Andrew forgot to factor in something important.

“Ah, so you’ll need help again then?”

…Huh?

“Is that why you're here? It's probably in a couple of days, or maybe tomorrow? Kinda odd for someone who’s alone to ask for that since from what I understand omega’s do this only with their partners or if someone’s too close to them and they can’t hold it any longer but okay.”

…What was Antonio even saying?

Did he not get the memo?

On the other side of the lab, a sigh of annoyance came from Luchino

"What's with you now?" Antonio said.

"Andrew", he spoke to the omega. " It seems like you have forgotten that betas do not have the same senses as alphas, therefore your words that might be obvious to an alpha won't be to him."

…Shit, he's right.

It completely flew over Andrew's head. He didn't understand because of very obvious reasons, ones that he completely forgot about.

"...Is there something I'm missing?"

"Yes there is, you idiot", Luchino annoyingly said. " He's trying to tell you he's pregnant, but forgot you're not going to understand the implications because of your nose."

It really was because of only that. An alpha would smell the situation from a mile away, just like Luchino did, while Antonio just couldn't.

"Oh."

That 'oh' was a surprised one. It did not seem negative, but also didn't bring Andrew much hope either.

"It's fine if you're not interested in taking care of the baby. I understand it's really sudden and all that-"

"Now wait, since when were you making an answer instead of me?"

Andrew looked at him, stunned.

"It's not really… ideal, I guess is the right word due to the situation, but why wouldn't I? You're gonna need help, right?"

"Y-Yea, I will."

"Count me in then. It is our child in the end."

Our child.

Yea, it was theirs.

"Uh, um…" Andrew was not sure how to respond to this answer. "Thank you!"

It's sudden, but he reaches to hug the hunter, startling him a bit but not enough for him to lose his balance or anything. He was met with a returned hug, his body feeling the warmth of the other.

"It's nothing really. I am the dad in the end."

They might actually be good dads if it continues going this well.
